Frequently Asked Questions
Does is cost anything to use TapeTrader or become a member?
This service is entirely free. Access to member's lists is free. Membership is free.
And, the music is free.
Who built this site and why?
We're a group of internet developers with an interest in live music, taping shows, and
trading tapes. We're regular people with jobs who are doing this in our spare time. Most
of us used to work for the same web development company in San Francisco. They know we're
still using their servers, but we try to keep the amount of time we're ignoring our real
jobs to a minimum.
Is my personal information safe?
TapeTrader Network respects your privacy. We hate spam. That's why your information is
safe with us. We will not sell, rent, trade, lend, barter, swap, loan, give, or otherwise
transfer your information to anyone else so they can spam you. You will always be able
to unsubscribe to the newsletter on our website.
It is possible for other people to get your information and contact you to set up trades.
That's why you put the information there in the first place.
It is also possible that some evil freak could hoover all of the email addresses on this
site one at a time and then spam you. This would be against our policy and wishes, but
technically feasible. We've thought about preventing this by setting up a mail relay on
the site which would effectively mask your actual email address and prevent its use for
anything other than setting up trades, but it seems kind of intrusive to make everyone use
the website just to send email. If we see a problem with spammers, we'll build this
functionality into a future release.
What about trading copyrighted material?
Don't trade copyrighted material. Just don't. Many bands allow taping and trading
tapes. Many don't. Over time, the ones who don't will learn. Until then, don't piss
them off by trading their shows. We don't have a complete list of either kind of band.
It's up to you to know, to be cool, and to do the right thing. Remember also that this
site is about trading live shows. This site is not about trading
copyrighted studio material, singles, CDs, imports, or whatever. And,
this site is not about selling, anything, at all.
Also, if a band that does allow taping goes through the trouble to release a great show
on CD or MP3 - buy it from them, and stop trading it. Buy their CDs and T-shirts too.
Go to their shows. We like them.
What do I do if I think you're infringing my copyright?
We're not here to screw anyone. We believe that we are doing a good thing. But, if you
think you're getting screwed, and you give us a chance to fix it, we will fix it for you.
No worries.
We don't actually have any material on our site. We just list the bands (and some of the
live shows) that other people have in their collections. And we help those people to find
each other.
However, if you believe that any content present on this site infringes your copyright,
you and we can both agree to abide by the Notice and Take Down Procedures of the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act. That means that you should contact our copyright agent and
providing the following information.
- A clear statement identifying the works, or other materials believed to be infringed.
- A statement from the copyright holder or authorized representative that the materials are believed to be infringing.
- Sufficient information about the location of the allegedly infringing material so that we can find and verify its existence.
- Your name, telephone number, address, and email.
- A statement from you under the penalty of perjury the information supplied is accurate, and, if you are not the owner of the copyright, that you are authorized to act on the copyright on the owner's behalf.
- A signature or electronic equivalent from the copyright holder or authorized representative.
We'll do our best to work with you.

Help. I forgot my password (and/or username)
No problem. If you've forgotten your password, but remember the email address you used
when you first signed up (and can still get email there) just go to the "Log In" screen,
and enter your email in the appropriate place. You'll get your password and username by
email in a matter of seconds.
If you don't remember what email address you used when you first registered (or if you
can't get emails there anymore because you forgot that password, or graduated, or
whatever) then you're out of luck and need to create a new account. Don't worry though.
Because traders are usually listed with the most recent visitors at the top of the page,
your old info will quickly drop way down the list and your new info will be at the top.
What do I do about a bad trader?
A new Trader Feedback functionality is scheduled for development and release by the end of
the year. The new functionality will function much like ebay's auction feedback. The
idea is to reward those traders who are most active, and most responsive. Members will
be able to leave feedback (positive or negative or neutral) for other members with whom
they have traded. Then, you'll be able to get a sense of a trader's history both in terms
of activity, and quality of trade. Until then, don't do big first trades with new people,
and be patient. Most of the time a "bad" trader is really just a slow trader.
How do I delete an account I'm not using?
We have no easy way of deleting accounts. More importantly, we have no way of verifying
who is really who. The best thing to do is this: Log in to your account, change all the
information to junk (especially the email address), save the changes, and then forget your
password.
When people go to my personal show page by clicking on a link in an email I send them, it says they have to log in. What's up?
It's a bug in some browsers that we haven't solved. However, if they go back to your
email and click on the link a second time, it'll work fine and they can see your list
without registering.
How come I don't see my name when I search for traders of bands that I trade? How come I don't see my shows when I search for shows that I know I have?
Don't worry, other people will find you, and will find your shows. You just don't show up
in your own searches. if you did, you'd keep stumbling across your own stuff when
searching.
You can make sure your shows are there by looking at your Shows List,
or going to your TapeTrader List Page at

.
