How to Help
Choose one of three ways to help the Tapetrader community.
and PayPal a donation to donate@tapetrader.com. They don't take any fee. You can do it
with your PayPal account if you already have one. If you don't have one, you can just use
your credit card. Or sign up. If you sign up for a new account, you get $5 from them and
TapeTrader gets an extra $5 from them on top of your donation.
and donate through Amazon's Honor System. You don't need to sign up for anything,
just have a credit card. It's processed through Amazon's systems, and then they
transfer the donation to us. Amazon takes $0.15 and 15% of the transaction, so it's
kind of a waste for one dollar gifts.
- Donate any extra RAM, a high capacity hard drive or two, or a fast CDR burner - we
could use it. A whole server? Right on! If you have a fast connection someplace and
can let us set up a server on it (with PCAnywhere access) that would be ultra cool.
To give physical stuff, email michael@tapetrader.com.
Why Help?
Now that a lot of people have a PayPal account, and Amazon has their "Honor
System", we can offer everyone the opportunity to contribute. And, take some of the
burden off the unemployed San Francisco dot-com trading community. Even the price of a
few blank tapes or a spindle of CDRs can make a huge difference.
Remember, TapeTrader is still a free site. Nobody should ever charge anyone anything for
music. The music we trade is not ours to sell. Nobody is required to contribute. If you
give, we can do cool stuff for the site. If you don't, no worries, we can still do cool
stuff for the site.
Any contributions we receive will be used solely for upgrading site hardware. It's not
used for paying anyone for their time, not even for beer and food while people are working
all nighters on the site. We're still volunteers. If for some reason we get a ton of
cash, we'll turn off the donation until we're broke again.
History
The TapeTrader website is built and maintained by volunteers from the trading community.
All of the original hardware and software for the site was donated by the people who
worked on the project - either bought and paid for, or scrounged in some manner from
friends or other traders. Our bandwidth for the web and database servers, and the SHN
server is donated on an ongoing basis. Our philosophy has always been "leverage
from traders in the community with the means and desire to help out, don't hassle the
ones who can't or don't want to."
