Abbreviations
What are all these Media type abbreviations?
- Cassette - Audio Cassette
- DAT - Digital Audio Tape, sort of like a little VHS tape. Pretty much the standard for live recordings these days.
- CDR - Compact Disc Recordable, like a CD except you make it yourself. Other formats can be burned to a CDR, but for the purposes of trading, CDR generally means a CD-Audio recording. Direct to CDR recording equipment is still a little expensive, but gaining in popularity.
- SHN - .shn, indicates an audio file compressed in the Shorten format. SHN is a lossless compression algorithm. Unlike 'lossy' compression formats like MiniDisc and MP3, the WAV files created and traded in SHN format do not lose any quality. SHN are frequently traded by direct download, as well as on data CDR.
- FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec, a lot like SHN but a different format. Not as old or as popular, but growing.
- DVD-Audio - A new audio format that packs a lot of music onto a recordable DVD.
- MiniDisc - A compressed audio format on a proprietary Sony formatted disc. Requires MiniDisc recording and playback equipment. You still see some MD recording at shows.
- MP3 - MP3, a highly efficient, lossy, compression format. MP3 recordings lose some quality in exchange for very small file sizes.
- VHS - VHS Video tape, not all VHS tapes are video. You occasionally find audio only recordings on VHS since the quality is nicer than cassette. More popular in the early 90's for some reason.
- DVD - Digital Video Disc, typically a video recording.
- VCD - Video CD, like a DVD but burned onto a regular CDR.
What are all these Source abbreviations?
- AUD - Audience recording, typically made in a designated taper's section.
- FOB - Front Of Board, also an audience recording but typically designates a recording made outside the taper's section (in front of the sound board). Some believe that FOB recordings can sound nicer because a good taper can get to the sweet spot in a venue. Most of the time however, it indicates a stealth recording.
- SBD - Soundboard, a patch from the band's mixing borad.
- FM - FM radio, a recording made off the radio
- Studio - Studio recordings, usually unreleased stuff or outtakes.
And, add a "D" in front of it and it means that the master was a digital source like a DAT.
